There’s something about Sedona’s red rocks and sweeping skies that makes every frame feel cinematic and that’s exactly what I hoped to capture with Jake & Karenna.
The Vision Behind the Shoot
When I planned this session, I wanted more than just pretty portraits. I wanted to tell a story: a story of connection, of wild beauty, and of moments that feel suspended in time. With Jake & Karenna as my muses, we set out to bring together moody light, romantic styling, and the desert’s dramatic landscapes.

Why Sedona?
As an Arizona photographer, I’m deeply rooted in this landscape. Sedona holds a special place in my heart:
- Unique terrain & color palette — The red rock formations, contrasting greens, and expansive skies provide a stunning backdrop you can’t replicate elsewhere in the Southwest.
- Magic hour potential — Sedona’s elevation and openness give us that rich, warm light in early morning and late evening, perfect for emotive portraits.
- An emotional geography — Beyond visuals, there’s an energy here that invites introspection, romance, stillness. It becomes part of the visual narrative.
Working in Sedona also means I get to show clients what’s possible when you lean into your location instead of trying to “flatten” it. The land is a character in these images, too.

- Changing light — Sedona’s skies shift fast. We had to stay nimble, adapt to where the light fell, and sometimes reposition quickly to keep the quality of light we wanted.
- Wind & dust — The desert loves to remind us it’s alive. But that’s also part of its charm. A little wind brings drama, and a little grit adds texture.
- Staying connected — Even through technical and environmental hurdles, the key is maintaining connection with the couple. The more at ease Jake & Karenna felt, the better the images flowed.
